Thanks to this wonderful R. Crumb Picture Bible I have finally completed my first section of this novel, at which point I have only one thing to say about it so far..
Hmmm..
I must truly thank the people that encouraged me to finish reading this Genesis saga as I no longer have any more Sleepless Nights. Upon its completion I have come to realize that this book’s attachment to reality is very remote. In fact, the only thing more incredible than these wild fantasies is the fact that people actually believe them. Yet I’ll have to admit, with the level of detail that is carefully woven into each of these fables, I can somewhat appreciate how a very impressionable mind would find itself easily beguiled.
What a powerful tool this Holy Bible must really be. It’s no wonder people seek degrees in pastorship. If people will believe these wild fantasies then they will most certainly believe anything that you say to them. All you have to do is stand in front of a podium wielding this magic text, toss out a few catch phrases mixed with a few lines from this book, and people will hang on your every word. On top of that, they will even toss money at you. And based on my observation these evangelists live quite handsomely. Not at all in danger of being poverty-stricken that’s for sure. If only I could find a way to somehow harness the mind control aspects of this book. The possibilities would be limitless. Then again, I do not think I would find much fulfillment in capturing the minds of desperately seeking individuals. Surely the path to enlightenment does not entail the subjugation of your fellow man through fear of damnation.
Anyway, the bottom line is that this R. Crumb book made the grueling task of reading the bible an exponentially less agonizing affair. None of it is in colour, and the women are a tad bit on the husky side, but there is plenty of gratuitous nudity and uncensored violence to make up for that. I even found his "behind-the-scenes" narrative on the making this book provocative. In short, I would say that this book is a must have for any fellow Heathen that is attempting the daunting task of trying to read the bible..
R. Crumb’s Illustrated Book of Genesis gets the Wanton..

A primitive peoples attempt at explaining how we all got here.
ReplyDeleteYet stands to this day in many eyes as an authentic recount of human history. Fascinating.
ReplyDeleteI think on your last post I commented that I don't particularly care whether it's true or not. But now I feel the need to add that I do care that it COULD be true. I find such inspiration in believing that not everything in this world makes sense, that there are awesome mysteries, that fairy tales could come true. A world in which everything is and must be plausible is seriously boring to me. Just sayin.
ReplyDeleteUnderstanding beginnings is important. Where do you plan to read next? Maybe one of the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke or John)?
ReplyDeleteSure, why not. I've got nothing to lose.
ReplyDeleteWell, based on my observation of this book so far there are certainly plenty of fantasies to indulge in so I guess you will not have to worry about being bored.
